ALSA, the DGT (Spanish Traffic Authority), and the Mapfre Foundation join forces to raise awareness about speeding and distracted driving.

Madrid, June 21, 2019. "Two hands on the wheel" and "90, better slower" are the two messages with which ALSA, the Directorate-General for Traffic, and the MAPFRE Foundation aim to promote road safety and contribute to the reduction of traffic accidents.

The first is aimed at raising awareness among drivers about the importance of alerting about distracted or inattentive driving, a risk factor that in 2018 caused 31% of accidents with victims; and the second, to avoid excessive or inappropriate speed on conventional roads, where a greater number of accidents are concentrated each year.

In the coming months, ALSA, with the support of Fundación MAPFRE, will disseminate on the rear of 80 of its buses these two key messages with which the three entities hope to raise awareness among drivers, especially in months when there are more trips. They also want to contribute to the Zero Accidents objective, for which ALSA, the DGT and Fundación MAPFRE work daily through activities they carry out, inside and outside of Spain.

Pere Navarro, Director General of Traffic, who today visited the headquarters of the passenger transport company, located in Madrid, highlighted the commitment of Fundación MAPFRE and ALSA to road safety, investing in safety systems in their fleet of vehicles, in training their drivers and in campaigns such as the one they have presented to us today, which carry road safety messages on the rear of their coaches. "It is a luxury that the Administration goes hand in hand and in the same direction with civil society, because together we add up and together we can avoid most traffic accidents."

Francisco Iglesias, CEO of ALSA, who also participated in the event, stressed that "for ALSA, road safety is a shared responsibility, so we are delighted to collaborate once again with the DGT and Fundación MAPFRE in this new campaign, spreading messages on our buses to raise awareness among all drivers about the danger of distractions behind the wheel and speeding on secondary roads."

Jesus Monclús, Director of Prevention and Road Safety at Fundación MAPFRE, also emphasized that "the bus is a safer way to travel than the car, so in itself it can already be considered a safety measure" and pointed out that thanks to the support of ALSA and DGT "we also use buses as a vector to influence some of the main risk factors, thus doubling the effectiveness of buses to improve the safety of travel."

In 2017, Fundación MAPFRE and ALSA began this campaign which focused on the importance of using seat belts on buses. A year later, the DGT joined this initiative in order to influence other frequent risks, such as the consumption of alcohol, drugs or medications, as well as speeding and distractions.
