Oviedo becomes the first city in Spain with a zero-emission hydrogen-powered urban bus.

Oviedo, April 15, 2021. The Asturian capital becomes the first city in Spain with a zero-emission hydrogen-powered urban bus. The vehicle was presented today and will be in the testing phase for the next three months, operating on regular routes. The bus, with a range of 400 kilometers and zero noise emissions, will serve all TUA routes.

The mayor, Alfredo Canteli, and the Councilor for Infrastructure, Nacho Cuesta, presented this morning, in the Plaza de la Catedral, the first urban bus powered by hydrogen that circulates in our country. The director of the Alsa Cornisa Zone, Javier Martínez Prieto, and the manager of TUA, Benigno Runza, also attended the event.

The first deputy mayor and Councilor for Infrastructure, Nacho Cuesta, pointed out that "Oviedo sees a milestone in green mobility fulfilled today thanks to this bus powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, a very important commitment in terms of transport and historical, an urban vehicle with zero emissions, powered by hydrogen, with a silent engine and significant autonomy. I want to thank TUA for its commitment and the fact that it always goes hand in hand with the City Council in the work we carry out on green mobility," said Nacho Cuesta.

The new urban bus, added the Infrastructure Councilor, "will have a trial period of three months and will cover the different lines of the city with the aim that, in the future, this type of vehicle will be the norm in the fleet of urban buses." In his opinion, achieving this goal "will mean a much more residual use of the private vehicle progressively and studying other means of mobility such as bicycles, with more cycle and pedestrian spaces. We are working along these lines to comply with the 20/30 agenda within this government's commitment to sustainable mobility," says the councilor.

Javier Martínez Prieto, director of the Alsa Cornisa Zone, highlighted that "the bus has zero emissions in a triple sense: it is powered by hydrogen that emits water vapor; it is green hydrogen, that is, that in the gas production process no emissions are generated and in third place it is silent, with zero acoustic emission." Martínez wanted to thank "the City Council and the government team for the leadership they have maintained in this. By 2022 we could have the hydrogen bus fleet. This last year we have acquired 63 units. Today a disruption is proposed in the change of technology in the mobility of Oviedo, a city that can opt for European Funds projects in improving mobility with zero emissions." "In Madrid the technology and the unit were presented, but today Oviedo becomes the first city with a bus of these characteristics operating. The hydrogen recharge will be carried out at the TUA facilities," concluded the director of the Alsa Cornisa Zone.
