Figueira da Foz
This Portuguese coastal city shines as a summer destination. Known for its beaches and nature, such as Praia da Claridade, the most famous for its extensive sand and its tourist atmosphere, ideal for surfers, bathers and families; or Serra da Boa Viagem, a mountain range near the city that offers hiking trails, viewpoints with spectacular views over the Atlantic and the city, and natural areas for outdoor enjoyment.
The Fort of Santa Catarina, a 16th-century fortress, and the Casino, founded in the 19th century, which also offers shows and cultural events, are part of its interesting historical heritage.
In addition, Figueira da Foz is located at the mouth of the Mondego River, which gives it an interesting geography between the sea and the river. It offers water activities such as boat trips and water sports.
Figueira has a rich culinary tradition based on seafood, such as bacalhau à brás (shredded cod with egg and potatoes), grilled sardines, or seafood rice dishes.
Salamanca
Located in the northwest of the peninsula, on the banks of the Tormes River, Salamanca is a melting pot of artistic styles such as Romanesque, Gothic, Plateresque and Baroque. The city is home to the oldest university in Spain, dating back to 1218, founded by Alfonso IX of León, which gives it an intense student atmosphere.
Declared a World Heritage Site in 1988, Salamanca has welcomed, among its illustrious students and visitors, important historical figures such as Fray Luis de León, Miguel de Cervantes, Christopher Columbus, Antonio de Nebrija and Miguel de Unamuno. You can lose yourself in its streets and find gems such as the two Cathedrals, the Plaza Mayor, the Casa de las Conchas, the Convent of San Esteban and the Roman Bridge that crosses the Tormes River. The best restaurants, which still preserve the spirit of the taverns of yesteryear, invite you to taste their cuisine, among which the Iberian ham from Guijuelo, the hornazo, the chafaina and the bollo maimón stand out.
