What to see in León

The streets of León exude elegance and history. One of its most famous buildings is the Parador de León Hostel of San Marcos, which was originally built to receive the pilgrims of the Camino de Santiago (the Way of St. James). Later it was converted into a monastery and was used as a prison during the Spanish Civil War. It is currently a hotel and is also home to the Archaeological Museum of León.

Don't forget to visit the impressive Gothic style Cathedral in Plaza de Regla, which showcases a striking stained glass rose window. Other great buildings include Casa Botines, designed by renowned Catalan architect Gaudí, as well as the San Isidoro Basilica and the Palacio de los Guzmanes, currently the seat of the Provincial Government of León.

As you discover the city you will come across all kinds of shops lining the city centre streets, as well as theatres, cinemas, and museums such as MUSAC, housing national and international exhibitions by world famous artists, as well as hosting the International Music Festival each year.

The wide selection of restaurants and bars offer traditional cuisine consisting primarily of roast meats, charcuterie, cheese, and excellent wines. The old quarter, around the San Martín and Húmedo area, offers a great selection of tapas bars and nightlife.
