What to see in Oviedo/Uviéu

Oviedo is home to great history and tradition. It is an open and welcoming place, helped by the fact that it is home to an important university, as well as being part of the Camino de Santiago del Norte (Northern Way of St. James), on the Atlantic route.

You can start your visit at the Los Pilares Aqueduct dating back to the 16th century, continuing on with the medieval wall that surrounds the city. This wall was declared an important historical and artistic heritage site and only some sections have been preserved. The façades of the City Hall and the Hotel de la Reconquista are also well worth admiring, as is the neoclassical Campoamor Theatre, where the Princess of Asturias Awards are presented every year.

Several palaces tower over Oviedo. The most famous of these are La Rúa Palace, the Camposagrado Palace, the Regional Palace, and the Santa María del Naranco Palace, located outside of the city. To continue discovering the secrets of the city, visit the Archaeological Museum of Asturias and the Holy Chamber, which contain relics that have been declared World Heritage Sites. The statue dedicated to film director Woody Allen has become an icon of Oviedo.

All kinds of shops line the streets, and theatres and cinemas offer the best in cultural events. The best restaurants invite visitors to savour delicious dishes like fabada (bean stew) and cachopo (breaded beef fillets with a ham and cheese filling) that bring together tradition and modernity in equal parts.
