Alsa wins Rabat urban transport contract
The contract has an initial duration of 15 years, extendable for seven more years, up to 22. A turnover of 1,000 million euros is expected over the life of the contract. The service must be launched within one year from the signing of the contract.
The transport system of the capital of Morocco and the second most populous city in the country after Casablanca, consists of 61 lines, for which a fleet of about 500 buses is required. It is expected to reach 109 million passengers annually and the contract involves the creation of 1,600 jobs.
The contract has been awarded by the inter-municipal cooperation entity "Al Assima" after the corresponding competitive process. This entity coordinates the transport competencies of the cities of Rabat-Salé and Temara, a metropolitan area in which 2.5 million people live. The main challenges of the new contract will be to undertake a profound modernization and improvement of the quality of the urban transport system, through the incorporation of new vehicles, the implementation of technological improvements, such as a state-of-the-art Operation Assistance System (SAE), and the commitment to intermodality, with the creation of a new fare integration system with the Rabat Tram.
LEADERSHIP IN MOROCCO
With this award, ALSA becomes the first private urban transport operator in the Kingdom of Morocco, where it has been present since 1999 managing urban transport in Marrakech. Later, the cities of Agadir, Tangier and Khourigba would be added, so that, with the addition of Rabat, the Spanish company will be present in five Moroccan cities.
This will significantly increase ALSA's presence in Morocco, where as a whole it will invoice 100 million euros per year from next year, manage a fleet of 1,000 buses, have 3,600 employees and 270 million passengers will use its services each year.
This new contract constitutes for ALSA a further step in its commitment to the implementation in Morocco of transport systems with European quality standards, innovative and technologically advanced, and is the result of the work carried out, long-term vision and vocation of permanence throughout the 20 years of presence in a country with enormous potential for development and growth.
